I am most grateful for this wealth of archival information.
But was it really called the “Economics Seminary”? I found from the entry that Leontief gave his lecture there on March 14, 1932 but I am 100% sure that he referred to it as “Economic Seminar”, e.g. in correspondence with Schumpeter.
As funny as it sounds to our ears, “seminary” was indeed the official designation of what would become a “seminar”, e.g. Hansen’s fiscal seminar. It would have been completely natural for both Schumpeter and Leontief to use the German word”Seminar” for the English translation “Seminary”. Anyhow, the word “Seminary” is still found in the Harvard documents from the early ‘thirties.
